In reality, it's probably a pattern that's most attractive, the less attractive patterns didn't attract bugs or didn't attract humans to collect as much and spread the seeds as they migrated, thus the less attractive ones didn't get fertilised, spread, etc.

Same with the peacock, the hens found the ones with the largest feather displays the most attractive so they preferred to mate with them
