Personally I prefer low stress training as you get to keep the tip you would otherwise lose by simply cutting it away but if you're short on space or whatever cutting doesn't really harm them at all.
If i need to tip to keep the height down. i'll usually tip them around the 8-12th node. That way it usually gives me 10+ good branches to work with as the plant matures.
