Protesters attempt to storm Tesla German plant, clash with police

BERLIN, May 10 (Reuters) - Protesters opposed to expansion of U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla's (TSLA.O) , opens new tab plant in Grueneheide near Berlin clashed with police as some of them attempted to storm the facility on Friday. Some 800 people took part in the protest, according to the organising group Disrupt Tesla, which claims the expansion would damage the environment. A Reuters video showed dozens of people wearing blue caps and face-covering masks coming from a nearby wooded area and attempting to storm the company's premises with policemen trying to prevent them, including by force. At least one protester was detained. "Why do the police let the left-wing protestors off so easily?" Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote on his social medial platform X, adding that the demonstrators didn't manage to break through. The video also showed medical personnel helping some injured people.

"We are here today to draw attention to the Tesla factory in Grunheide for the environmental destruction here," Disrupt Tesla spokesperson Ole Becker told Reuters.

The group also wants to highlight environmental destruction in countries like Argentina or Bolivia, brought about by lithium mining, according to Becker. Lithium is a key resource for electric vehicle batteries.
"We protect the freedom of assembly," Brandenburg police spokesperson Mario Heinemann said, "but we are also responsible for public order and safety. That means we will also intervene when necessary".

The police confirmed that the protesters tried to enter the plant's premises, but were prevented, with several people taken into custody, and that it received a few reports of injuries.
Some of the demonstrators have damaged a few Tesla cars using pyrotechnics and paint at a nearby car storage site, the police spokesperson added.
Tesla earlier this week said it will shut the factory for one day on Friday, without specifying a reason.

all fun and games until those lithium batteries go up in flames
Dangerous heaps of shit
Mate I'm already terrified of my 10s4p 21700 ebike battery tbh. Me mate got a cheapo off eBay with unmarked cells and it went up while on charge a few weeks ago. Glad I got something custom-made with nice cells and a good BMS.

A scenario that was bought to my attention the other day is. What will happen when one of these EV cars go up in flames in a basement car park of a high rise building. Potentially with other EV cars around it.

Fuck what about the other mines of gold, copper, coal, iron ore, nickel, cobalt and about 200 other minerals and elements dug from the ground?
Humans are fucking the place no matter how we live!!

Statistically they’re still less likely to combust than ICE vehicles.

Exactly. Everyone loves to rag on cobalt mining in the Congo and the slave/child labour involved without realising that over 50% of mined cobalt is used in the petroleum refining process.

That might be the case, but the intensity of the fires between the two are quite different.

If a ICE vehicle went up in such a scenario, the fire system in a basement car park would most likely have a better chance of containing a fire than what it would if a EV went up.

I love how touchy everyone is over this subject. It's always basically "theres issues with Ev's" and the responses are always "just go live in the stone age then".

I think there's an inbetween lol. You are all so dramatic.

The single passenger vehicle is one of the worst inventions of the past 100 years. It has lead to exploitation of workers (Ford), support of facisism (Ford, Musk), segregation of communities through highway building, lack of investing in public transport, urban sprawl, fatalities, lead poisoning, carbon emissions etc...

No matter how you power them, they still have the same problems. Walking, cycling and PT should be the way.

Musk is a cunt who gets in the way of real innovation by wasting money on his own vanity to con simple minded people to think he is clever. Fuck him and all power to the workers.

I'm not a fan of EV's, but i wouldn't think i hate on them either. If anything, it's good to see many options being explored these days, compared to back when Automotive or Oil Industries would buy up any new patent that threatened their industry with the sole purpose of shutting it down to protect their interests.

Hydrogen would be my favoured one, but its a fair way away yet it seems, and whether it'll ever be a viable option on a large scale is a concern.

Hydrogen is an interesting tech but the fundamental is that it is only a storage medium. You still need to generate the power needed to make it. Until we have large scale renewable power, hydrogen is not really any use in the short term. Australia is not short of power generation sources - we just are fucking hopeless when it comes to innovation and long term planning.

Same sort of story for the Snowy Hydro 2.0 thing - and that has been a shit fight from the beginning. But like hydrogen, they are sexy sounding projects and misdirect funding away from base generation. Until any of this stuff is sorted at scale, I don't see there being much benefit to a handful of EV's or similar on the roads.
