I've never diluted, but some growers add dry flour. Primary reason is for ease of application/spreading so all the pollen isn't concentrated on a single cola or two. I believe it also has benefit to inhibit moisture

Oh right I stole 2 of my daughters little paint brushes and just dipped it in and gently tickled the pistils then marked the branches so I know which pollen was used
