Id love a Cannatrol. But theyre too expensive, especially for something so small. I couldnt even fit/dry my modest indoor harvest in a current model
I chopped my last harvest down on Monday 25/8 after 69 days flowering. During the last 3 weeks of flowering it was bucketing rain around 30mm every day, with humidity constantly hitting 99%, even in middle of the day with lights on. In that environment I lost a few top colas to mould, despite having 5 fans( 2 were temporary) inside the grow space.
The rain stopped 10 days ago, and westerly winds hit. We have been experiencing ultra low local humidity of around 37% rh during this period.
Ive been reading online experiences of growers using the fridge to dry cannabis, using the Lotus method. I've previously used a freezer for drying, but there's just not enough room for more than a few colas in the family freezer
So I set aside 2 plants to trial the Lotus method. I placed a hygrometer in a small bar fridge a few days before harvest. Daily readings inside the fridge were rh of around 45% to 50%, and temperatures of -1C.
This is what the 2 plants look like after 10 days in the fridge.

Yes, the Lotus method uses pizza boxes to dry cannabis in the fridge.
When I first put roughly trimmed nugs in the fridge the, humidity spiked to 86%rh for a few days. But I knew the fridge was constantly fighting the plant humidity, trying to bring it all down to around 45%rh. I still opened the fridge every day to check the buds
The plants are actually drying. Ive seen the humidity drop slowly over 10 days. Fridge today is at 4%C. and 71%rh. Leaves are cold and mainly dry. Flowers are definitely drying, and no sign of mould.
Apparently the technique calls for cannabis to be left in the fridge until humidity reduces down to 62%rh. Temp is *generally* irrelevant as long as it stays very bloody cold. Apparently mould can't develop if temperatures are very bloody cold
At 62%rh, remove the buds from fridge and enjoy at room temperature. Reports indicate this can take about 14 to 21 days for a proper dry/cure to occur.
I'll report back once the humidity in fridge hits 62%rh.
If this drying method works well, my next harvest is due late November. Ill sell the bar fridge and pick up a second hand full size fridge just before harvest.
Has anyone used The Lotus Method before?
Oh, my other whole plants were drying way too quick in the garage. Temps were between 9%c to 20%c, but daily humidity has hovered down around 37%rh most days. After 3 days of air dry I loosely wrapped every single plant in glad wrap. It slowed down the dry process and Ive now jarred those plants at day 9. I won't be able to get away with that air dry method during the summer heat. But if Lotus method doesn't work, under the house is still much cooler than a garage in summer.
Most reports suggest the Lotus method can work almost as well as a Cannatrol to manage the dry process, with a specific goal to maximise the terp profile. But at about 5% of the cost of a Cannatrol.........with the added potential of a ham and pineapple terp profile
