If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a used Can-Fan Q-Max EC Silenced fan for a steal ($200), but don't get a controller, you will find they run FLAT OUT without the controller.
One of these (https://www.hydroexperts.com.au/Can...MM-8-Inch-710CFM-Mixed-Flow-Built-in-Silencer)
But the cost of a controller is completely over top! ($200+)
Here is how to control the speed for about $10.
EC fans use a 0-10V control - They have a 10V source, ground and a speed control wire - the EC protocol gives a 1mA maximum draw.
All you need is a 6.5mm Stereo Plug (also known as RTS - Ring, Tip, Shield) and a 10K Linear Potentiometer (also known as a variable resistor)
Wiring is as follows:
Yellow wire (internally) is the sense wire (ring)
Orange wire (internally) is the 10V source (Tip)
Black wire (internally) is the Ground (Shield)
Black wire to Left hand pin of 10K Pot
Yellow wire to center pin of 10K Pot
Orange wire to right hand pin of 10K Pot
Hope this helps someone out!
See pictures for details. You could even hook the wires on the back of the RTS socket directly to a potentiometer mounted in the junction box to do this ultra-cheaply.
If anyone is interested, I will also document a simple circuit that uses a plug-pack that is controlled by the lighting circuit that has two speeds - Minimum when the lights are off, and a higher speed when the lights are on.
