7EG germination rates for different strains

G’day all,
Recently purchased a few strains from 7 East Genetics (fantastic delivery and service btw) and have attempted to pop them all. All were germinated the exact same way (submerged in water, kept warm and dark, until seed swells and then straight into soil), but some strains really struggled and straight up failed.
I did store all seeds in a fridge for a month or so due to a prior plan, but decided to pop them - perhaps this was the cause?
Below are the strains I got and germination rates:
CBD Panties: All swelled but none germinated
CBD Dragon: Low germination rate but the ones that did are thriving.
Purple Dragon Balls: None germinated.
Grape Dragon: Literally every single seed germinated and is thriving.
Was there something I could have done better?
Was it the refrigeration, and should I avoid that storage method in future?
Is there a difference in strains that changes germination rates?
Or am I just a fuckwit and did everything wrong (don’t be afraid to say it).

Also, i’m gonna need more seeds now, so any incredible strains I should try out next?

If some are thriving I would say it's not you fault!!
These seeds come from the other side of the world so no one knows what they have been exposed to. Could be heat could be rough handling could be old seed stock fuck knows!
If they all failed it would be your fault!!
I would tell them this and see what they say!

did you check the germination info on the page? Apparently, some of the strains have thick seed casings "due to the outdoor breeding and the canadian sun". I have dealt with a few sativa dominant strains or landrace dominant strains that have had very thick casings and have a few here that need a few days soak, or a light sand before placing in medium.

usually just chuck seeds in a 50/50 mix of coco and seeding mix, but some seeds just swell and stall unless i give them a pre crack or a light sand and a soak. The BC mango seeds I have are notorious for swelling and stalling, and so are some of the Laos landrace. the casings normally require manual removal. These seeds also have a habit of popping up two weeks after you plant a second seed as youi assumed it was dead lol.

I'm not sure how true the outdoor breeding claim is as I have no breeding experience.

I've grown a few of 7 East's strains and have had great germ rates. I think I've only had 2 not pop and I wasn't bothered as they where one of the many, many freebies. I don't think storing in the fridge would be causing the issues, unless they have experienced a lot of temp swings i.e. from opening and closing the door 🤷‍♂️

Having said that, those are 4 strains I haven't tried, so my experiences can't really be translated to your situation. What I can say though, is they have great customer service and I think contacting them, as @Porky mentioned above, would be your best bet (just keep in mind the time difference).

I've germed Grape Dragon, Trophy Wife, Purple Bliss, Headstrong twice, Triple Dragon. I've stunted most of them except Headstrong and Trophy Wife. My method is just soaking them in water for 12 or so hrs then planting in the media. Not sure why they stunted, I suspect my bunnings coco block wasn't rinsed enough. EDIT: You can see the one in the back how it's tiny. Whereas the headstrong was planted in a rockwool block.

I wait until tail has sprouted a few mm in glass of water, before planting in medium. I don't know if that's something you could try different. Seed will survive 72 hours in water, even if tail sprouted on first day. Seeds in water at correct temperature can easily survive 3 days without drowning.

Ive had 100% germ rate from 7east but not a huge sample size.

14 seeds, 4 strains, including 3 cbd panties (all fems!) Im pretty new to the game still, so take this with a grain of salt.

Soaked in luke warm water for 48 hours. Even after this time most had only just cracked revealing only a thin white tinge. They all need tapping down to sink them after a day.

Using tweezers, gently placed cracked seeds into a 5-10mm deep hole in pre rinsed and lightly fed straight coco, Using100mm pots, Feed basic grow nutes at around 0.5 EC immediately then once daily.

I use a 60ml syringe with a bit of 4mm clear hose attached and squeeze the feed around the seed evenly and very gently, as to not dislodge the seeds initial placement too much. Pour it in too quick and the seed floats up out its spot.

They all rose up from the coco in 4 to 6 days. Certainly on the longer timescale to the other shit Ive grown for whatever reason. Many also needed a bit of help removing the seedpod to 'unleash' the cotyledons 24-36 hours after rising.

At the other end of the scale, I recently soaked a Gorilla cookies auto, from Fastduds. After 24 hours it had a 5mm tail so I planted it. It was up and spreading its wings after 2 days. Fastduds by name and nature.

Whilst it sounds like youre doing the correct techniques, Im wondering if your soil is sub par and/or maybe environmental/water quality issue allowing only the strongest to survive.

Yes, you’ve made a good case for better soil and water quality.
I’ll be placing another order with 7EG, and will use higher quality grow medium, like coco.
Any recommendation for better quality water, like use of spring water with nothing added?

I reckon the best water is rain water. Sits around 7 pH which is good for soil, and drops to 5.7-6 pH once I mix the nutes for coco grows. Occasionally have to add a drop or 2 of pH down during summer once the water temp hits over 20 degrees.

I usually pair rain water with std 2 part nutrients in coco, but trying a water only soil for this grow. If you dont want to add extras or have to feed the cheap $5 potting mix soils, the good water only living soils cost around $100 for 50 litres which is the recommended amount for a full cycle in soil apparantley. I have some organic bloom and grow booster if required but soil is new to me.

if we're talking germination only it can help to add Fulvic Acid only to rain water @ 1 to 100 = 10ml per liter , soak until seed cracks & you can see the white of a tap root then transfer to the media of choice , not to deep
Fulvic acid is a catalyst of enzymes & enzymes are what are kicking into gear inside a seed at germination

use room temp water , no need to start with or try & control water temps because that can go south very easily with heat mats & heated water so room temp water is fine

media is another conversation but most commercial seed raising mixes should be fine to transfer into
Fulvic Acid

What dilution ratio did you use.?
Sedge I just followed Mediseeds instructions.....got 19 plants to maturity from 3 strains from 2 different vendors from 20 seeds total...

Just one round of germination isnt any absolute proof but its certainly encouraging and i will use the peroxide method next time again for sure..

I always use hydrogen peroxide ( capful) to help germinate seeds in a glass of water. I can't definitely say it improves the process, but it doesn't hurt 🤕

I got a bottle a few weeks back just to have around when I use older seeds ,,think I’ll mark that ratio on the bottle so I don’t forget,,,thanks

I've got a heated propagation tray I fill it 3/4 with water so the water heats up then damp paper towel in the sanga bag. There is a tray that came with it turned upside down so the bag is not in the water. It keeps the seeds at 27 degree's and alot of strains pop and throw tails quickly it's the best thing I'm my equipment bunnings used to sell them but now they just sell em without the built in heater. I do the same for clones to and with it being full of water it's gets real humid in there and the clones hardly droop and no need to spray them I just have a cool white down light sitting on top for the light
