More than 80 cannabis plants have allegedly been found growing in a hydroponic set-up across five rooms of a NSW house.

A 60-year-old man is due to face court charged with cultivating cannabis and diverting electricity.

Police uncovered 83 mature cannabis plants growing across five rooms of a Bolton Point house at Lake Macquarie, south of Newcastle, about 12.30pm on Monday.

Electricians found the power had allegedly been illegally diverted to bypass the meter — a known tactic used to avoid massive electricity bills in grow-house operations, according to the Crime Stoppers website.

The 60-year-old man was charged with diverting/using electricity without authority, enhanced indoor cultivation of cannabis for a commercial purpose, and cultivating cannabis (greater than indictable but less than commercial quantity).

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Tuesday.

These people buy a house, do suicide grows in it for 1-3 years to pay for the next one, then pack up, rent the house out, and do it to the next house over and over. Knew a bloke who got busted in one of them, was a caretaker, nice little Vietnamese dude. Its all gang stuff, about moving money and keeping money increasing in volume.

Well now? Yeah. But back then, not immediately. Back then you would be treated as a regular criminal until they had the time or energy to deport you. My mate had to do 3 years in prison whilst he was being deported and one day I got a happy message from him saying hes free and back home lol, just out of nowhere guards came to his cell and said "pack your stuff up mate you're going home".

His family had debts, that's why he did it apparently, so yeah human trafficking basically.
