Hello everyone

Thought I'd Introduce myself. I'm a complete amateur when it comes to growing and need help. Over 10 years ago use to be a big pot head but traded it for drinking every day and smoking a pack a day not sure how that happened. Past few months living a lot more healthy don't drink or smoke any more but want a way to blow off steam. Been doing a lot of research in to all the CBD strains and what not and reckon all the stuff I smoked back in the day was probably pretty different to the genetics you can source from good breeders now. have bought a fair few autos off mediseeds man but it’s probably easier to split an atom then crack those seeds. Have followed their instructions to the tee only to have 1 in 12 seeds survive more then a month. only 1 other one sprouted only to have it die 2 weeks later despite keeping it out of the rain and 15 other seedlings of herbs, veges and flowers all survive ffs. The only one that is going is a month old and not even 5cm tall. If there’s a competition for who can grow the weakest, lowest yield plant I’m winning it. I used a jiffy pot with seed/seedling mix from Bunnings. Buried it 1 week after sprouting digging in roughly 20l of seals 5 in 1 potting mix, 25% perlite some manure 2x handfuls, compost 1 handful and cane mulch then bark chips on top. I think the problem is my backyard is small, town house, style and shaded, only gets 7 hours of sunlight atm which is broken up from a paper bark tree planted in the middle and fences and limiting sunlight hours. What are autos going to look like, is my yield even going to be more then 5 grams lol. round the side garden is maybe 4-5 hours of sunlight but not broken up as much from trees. Are this conditions ok for growing autos? Is it mediseeds shit seeds? We’ve had not much sunlight lately in brizzy. The guy at the hydro store reckons they will definitely stink when they're flowering outside and neighbours will smell. My neighbours are about 7m away…. Separated by a fence. I can take cuttings of golden durante, maya and grow them in to nice hedges, I can grow pertunas, lettuce, beans from seed easy. But fuck me this seems to be hard atm.

I went to the local hydro shop yesterday with a plan to buy a small grow tent set up. I just really want to grow small plants happy just yielding 15-50 grams and trying to find a nice strain to sooth anxiety and de-stress after long hours working during the week and relax sat/fri. Not going to sell any, just if I get a bit too much will give away to friends for free. I just want to grow 2 plants at a time. If you grow with lights do you have to always be adding those chemicals and fertilizers to it? can you not just put it in good soil and water it? Can I chuck other seeds like chilli, lavender, flowers and grow from seed for 1-2 months in grow tent and then plant in garden or will it not work.?? also I bought some seeds from cannivault from a link from one of threads. I sprouted 2 for 2 what a huge difference compared to mediseeds. And the stems look a lot fatter and stronger then rare occasion something from mediseeds pops its head up. Look at photo of list of what the guy at hydro shop wrote tnet 1mx1mx2m minimum I need. The size of the tent he reckons has to be 2m high, having a ufo light in a 1.6m wont work very well supposedly. It will be a lot more stealythy in my garage if its not so big. I’m prepared to spend up to $1500 if it could be stealthy. Eg people passing by glancing in when we’re taking car out. A smaller height one is easier to hide but will it work.

Whoa more paragraph spacing please 😂

Welcome mate. Sounds like you have already done some research. Honestly just get what you feel is big enough for your space.

If you’re worried about the tent when you open the garage maybe look into grow cabinets. They would look just like a tool cabinet.
If you’re good at diy you could even build one.

Look at a 60cm X 60 cm tent, at least 180cms high - you WILL need that height. Add a 100 watt ( true watts) LED light. A 4 inch extraction and 2 small oscillating fans. Can easily grow 2 plants at a time ( 7 to 8 litre final pots). Seems to be issues with Mediseedman beans, try another seed vendor

Mate you can grow plants in whatever size tent or room you want. There is NO LIMIT.
People grow in buckets even. Check out some of the micro grow setups on reddit.

Training plants and scrogging will keep a canopy where you want it. Be a bit selective with strains though eg: Do not grow 2m Sativas! (or big bud in small rooms :()

But also dont believe ANY of the shit seed sellers write about their products.

All the crap describing special effects differing sensations etc crap. THC is THC and CBD is CBD.

the good news is that there are so many different ways to do what you like, without too much stress. :)

as to the soil question … you have a couple of paths you can go that mainly centre around soil volume - smaller pots that use soil for one grow or larger pots that aren’t too mobile, but can provide enough nutrients for many grows. with a good sized pot (50 litres seems to be a good compromise size) it is very possible to have a soil setup, where you don’t need fertilisers or lots of hassles.

one simple and long-term solution would be to get two good quality 50L fabric pots and fill them nearly to the top with easy-as-organics no-till soil (or something similar) - you can use some left over cane mulch over this soil. also, get a blumat moisture reader and a good sprayer ($35-40 is heaps) that has a nice slow, spray setting. also buy 0.5l of hypoaspis bugs (around $30) and put them on your soil surface, before putting the mulch down. then buy some quality auto seeds from a place that has a good variety of proven breeders - the reason for autos is that they are better with light leaks; you can get small-height varieties if needed; you can offset your grow, so that one plant is planted initially in a pot and 4-5 weeks later you plant the next one; and you can grow different varieties at the same time i.e. maybe a nice diesel to get you moving and a mellow afghani to wind down with; and you can plant them directly into you big pot.

i like LED bar lighting which allows for more efficient cooling, can be dimmed when visiting your plants (handy for stealth) and also helps if you pick a strain that is a bit big for your tent and light setup - i’ve had a plant grow through the spaces between the LED bars ... hehehe ... it gained another 10cm of height, which at the time was handy.:) if you decide on something shorter and smaller for stealth, probably the smallest tent you could get away with (growing small autos with an led light), would be a 60cm x 120 x 150cm (WxLxH), but taller is always easier.

as to an easy way to manage your soil … all you will need to do is top dress every 4 weeks or so or when the level of your soil drops about 3-4cms. firstly, buy a small amount of quality worm castings - 10l is heaps. buy 250g of dried comfrey, nettle, yarrow, dandelion and horsetail - a place in tassie sells these. lastly, buy 250g of bull kelp. put all the herbs in a sealable bucket and mix them nicely. when it’s time to top dress, you have two options - one is to gently remove the sugar can mulch from the soil and to put your herbs, castings and kelp over the soil and put back the mulch and water or alternatively, to just top dress straight over the mulch. if using sugarcane mulch, i’d remove the mulch (as it takes a long time to breakdown), top dress and then put back the mulch. so basically … every four weeks all that is needed is a top dress of mixed herbs, castings and kelp (about two tablespoons). if you can get a nice cover crop going that would also make your life a lot easier with watering - a combo of bq mulch, red clover and fenugreek works nicely - green harvest have these.

when you first get your soil, i would also plant a cover crop and let it establish (about two weeks max) before planting your canna seed. basically … get the soil and stick it in the pots, sprinkle cover seeds over the top surface, sprinkle a little more soil and then add your mixed herbs/castings (about 3-4cm deep) and then your mulch layer - initially, make this 2cm deep, so the seeds can go through easily (later you can add more sugarcane as needed). water everything in nicely and wait until your cover crop comes through. after two weeks or when the cover crop is getting bigger, make a small hole in the mulch and plant your canna seed in the soil - don’t fill the hole with cane mulch - just a small see-through amount is fine. when the seed pops and is about 5cm above the mulch layer, gently push the mulch back around it’s stem. in this setup you can water around 300-400ml on a slow spray setting, with only the mulch and top surface of the water receiving moisture, which is handy in a big wetted pot with a small sprout. keep an eye on your digital moisture reader and water when needed.

Thanks a lot for that lengthy reply pug much appreciated. I've downloaded hydroponics mastery Bible and watching some peoples pretty cool aquaponics set ups on you tube giving me ideas. I figured there's no rush going to do a lot of research and design an awesome system. The Mrs is keen to get some fish too. anyone have success with aquaponics.
